“I’m calling bullshit on the U.S. Steel executives”
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Steel executives threatened to move its headquarters from Pittsburgh, putting thousands of union jobs in the region at risk should the proposed sale to Nippon Steel fall through. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) released the following statement in response:
“As I’ve always said, I will follow and stand with the United Steelworkers against the shameless executives looking for a golden parachute.
“I’m calling bullshit on the U.S. Steel executives, just like I did shortly after that first announcement.
“Proud to stand and fight for what is right and fair for USW and the communities that I call my home.”
Senator Fetterman, who lives across the street from U.S. Steel’s Edgar Thomson plant in Braddock, has been outspoken on this issue since news broke of the proposed sale last December.
Fetterman previously filmed a video from his roof across from the plant, slamming the proposed deal and vowing to do everything he could do to protect the union jobs and block the sale. Last March, Senator Fetterman and Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) sent a letter to U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel expressing concern that the companies were failing to meet their commitments to Pennsylvania workers. In June, Senator Fetterman joined Senators Casey and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) on a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, again called on the administration to block the deal warning that Nippon Steel’s well-documented record of dumping steel products in the U.S. presents a clear conflict with our ability to continue to defend the domestic steel industry.
